What is a Fastag
Since 15 Feb 2021, the payment of Toll tax at the Toll plazas is completely cashless and you can now make the toll fees electronically with help of a new device known as Fastag. Fastag is a new electronic device that can be purchased from many banks like SBI, HDFC, ICICI banks, and mobile wallet platforms like Paytm, Google Pay, etc.

Fastag is pasted on the windscreen of your vehicle so that whenever your vehicle crosses a toll plaza, then the Fastag card can be easily read up by the reader or scanners of that toll plaza. The toll charge is then cut off from your Fastag wallet automatically. With the help of Fastag, you can make toll payments at any toll plazas without having the need to stop your vehicle.
Here in this article, we will give details about how you can transfer the ownership of Fastag from one vehicle to another or from one user to another user.
Steps to transfer ownership of the Fastag
To purchase a new Fastag for your vehicle from any service provider you have to submit various documents like Vehicle’s Registration certificate, Passport size photographs, and KYC documents which may include your Voter Card, Aadhar Card, PAN Card, Driving license, Passport, etc. You will get a Fastag for your vehicle only after submitting these documents and verifying your KYC.
The Fastag issued by any service provider is unique and can be used only for that particular vehicle for which the RC is submitted and the Fastag is allocated. It is not possible to use or transfer the Fastag issued for one particular vehicle on any other vehicle. If you attempt to install a Fastag purchased for one vehicle on another vehicle, then Fastag can be blacklisted and you will not be able to use its services.
When you purchase a new Fastag from any bank, then the Fastag is linked to that bank account. If you purchase a Fastag from Paytm then you don’t have any need to recharge it because the toll payment will be deducted automatically from the balance in your Paytm wallet. For vehicle owners who sold their vehicles, it is important to note that after selling their Fastag they must close or deactivate their existing or old Fastag account instantly otherwise the money will keep deducted from a bank account or Paytm wallet that is linked to that Fastag account.
Another important thing to remember is that the person who purchases your vehicle will not able to get a new Fastag issued for that vehicle if you don’t deactivate your existing Fastag.
The best way to deactivate your old Fastag account is that you should contact the helpline or customer care of the Fastag provider. After contacting the customer support team, you can generate a request to close your Fastag account. Your Fastag closing request will be processed shortly and the new vehicle owner will now be able to apply a new Fastag for that vehicle.
Although currently there is no other way to close a Fastag or to transfer it to another user than contacting the customer support team, Paytm has added a new feature for the Fastag users. With this feature, the vehicle owners who purchased Fastag through Paytm can transfer it to another user with the help of Paytm.
The steps required to transfer the ownership of Fastag to another user through the Paytm app are mentioned below:
- First of all the Fastag users have to open the Paytm app on their smartphone.
- After opening the app, log in by entering your Credentials.
- When you are logged in, then you will notice the ‘Fastag’ section.
- Click on this ‘Fastag’ option.
- Now a list of Fastags will appear in front of you.
- Select the particular Fastag from this list for which you want to transfer the ownership.
- Now enter the Mobile Number of the user you want to transfer the ownership of the Fastag.
- Remember that the person to whom the Fastag has to be transferred must also be a Paytm user.
- After entering the mobile number of the new user, you have to tap the ‘Proceed’ button.
- A list of further steps will appear to you that you have to follow.
- When you have completed all the steps, then the owner of the Fastag will be transferred to another user successfully.
